Using Post-its in Your Classroom

Try this quick and easy review game idea.

Each table gets a pack of Post-its to write their answer for each question. If they get it right, they put it on one of 6 pieces of chart paper hung around the room with a secret point value. (Write the value on the back of the paper very lightly in pencil.)

At the end of science class, I reveal the point value for each chart paper, and they count up how many of their stickies are on each and calculate their points.

Students love the mystery of this game, and the suspense keeps them engaged!

Assessing student knowledge doesn’t always involve a test, quiz, or project.

3. Social Emotional Learning and Post it Notes

Most districts have a major push on adding SEL into your lessons, and rightfully so, as our students need to improve their skill set to navigate the world.

Use sticky notes to help students build a positive self-image of themselves.

Here are a few ideas

  • Write encouraging notes to your students and randomly leave them on their desks.
  • Once a week, have students write down one good thing happening in their life. They can share it with the class or post it to a bulletin board you have in your classroom.
  • Create a chart for an SEL check-in. Students can move the post daily to let you know how they are feeling that day.
  • At the beginning of the school year, after school breaks, or after a long absence, write a welcoming note to let the student know you are happy they are in your class.

4. Interactive Vocabulary Walls

Create a Word Wall using a blank wall or bulletin board in your classroom.

Write down challenging science words or terms on Post-it notes and stick them on the wall.

Encourage students to interact with the wall by matching definitions, drawing illustrations, or using the words in sentences.

It’s like a living dictionary that students can update and explore!
